Bridge Over Troubled Walters – Julie Durdin
1600 words Humour
Sheila would like to be holidaying somewhere other than on the Norfolk Broads. Gordon, her husband, would like to be anywhere other than stuck under a concrete bridge. Enter Peter to the rescue.
Sheila closes her eyes and tilts her face towards the midday sun. She is in Venice, a gondola gently rocking beneath her, a tanned gondolier humming softly as he digs his pole into the water, propelling them along. ‘Sheila!’ Her eyes snap open. No gondola, no charming gondolier. Instead, a white and blue pleasure craft, aptly named Big Bertha, and a looming bridge. She shouts, ‘Gordon, you need to—’ Grabbing a handrail, Sheila ducks as the boat crunches into the underside of the concrete bridge.
