Jean-Pierre unlocked his front door, threw his case on to the nearest chair and hurried out on to the veranda. Leaning on the wooden rail surrounding it, he heaved a huge sigh of relief and relaxed for the first time that day.
The journey down to his weekend hideaway had been a nightmare; wall to wall traffic; three lanes of the motorway reduced to one, and if that wasn’t enough, the air-conditioning in his car stopped working.

Where’s the Jam
‘This is just perfect’ sighed Lillian as she gazed through the kitchen window. She could see for miles, across open fields dotted with a miscellany of wildlife.
She could spend long periods just gazing out of that window – apparently doing nothing, when in fact her brain would be racing away. If she wasn’t planning how to spend the rest of her life, she reflected on how she had wasted so much of it so far. Usually, it was the past on which she focussed.
