Darlene’s mother had been the most beautiful woman in the world and each night before she slept her mother would whisper in her ear, “Are you my precious?” She was eight, her sister seven, when her mother left. Apparently, she wasn’t precious enough for her mother to take her with her. She never blamed her for leaving her husband, their father, a scowling miser, but she never forgave her mother for leaving them behind. Her mother used to light a candle in a small red glass in front of an eight inch statue of the Virgin Mary. She’d say to her and her sister, “I pray for you every day.” After she left, Darlene lit a candle every day and prayed that her mother would come back.
