George receives more than one surprise for his birthday.  Only one of them is planned by his wife, Hannah, who has been busy trying to keep him out of the doghouse.

Hannah began preparing for George’s birthday well in advance of the day.  She had learned from experience that this was wise.  George before his birthday was like a kid at Christmas.  He prowled hallways, poked into closets, sniffed the air for exotic smells and just generally tried to trip her up.  It had become a game.
