Annie’s words rip through the hubbub of chatter in the village tea-shop, as I sip my morning coffee.
“Josie’s painting her front door green.”
“What did you say, Annie?” I’m certain I’ve misheard.
“I said Josie is painting her front door green. I saw her when I walked past. At least, she’s having it painted; not doing it herself, y’know.”

Planning a wedding should be a cause for celebration, not a time for recriminations. Sisters Emily and Sue disagree over the organisation of a wedding just six months after the death of their beloved father. Can Emily bring the occasion off successfully? Will Sue relent and be there on the day?
The Wedding
The argument was as sharp as it was unexpected.
‘How can you be so selfish? Dad’s only been gone six months and you’re planning a wedding?’ My sister bit her lip and balled her hands into fists. A flush spread slowly across her face.
‘Sue, don’t you think Dad would’ve wanted…’ I tried to placate her.
‘No, I don’t – and nothing you can say will make me change my mind’. Sue grabbed her coat and ran from the room, slamming the door behind her. Mum had stayed quiet throughout. She gazed at the door for a moment, and then turned to me. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
