Claudia’s favourite break from marking student scripts was to sink into her feather bed mattress in the breeze of the pulsing ceiling fan, and hold the silver-gilt-framed photograph of Sanjeev above her. It was one of the few occasions where her camera had caught him unawares. He was smiling, but not the usual cheesy camera smile. She’d gaze into the dark eyes, which seemed focussed on some distant Nirvana, and be transported back to Sri Lanka again. A remote beach up-country, the tender brush of stubble on her cheek, the rich fragrance of musk mingled with coconut oil, and a swollen evening sun slowly spilling crimson across the western sky.
