Five shoppers are tempted by an intriguing vegetable called karela which they find in their local supermarket. Their purchases lead to various misadventures. A trainee shop assistant, who does not himself eat vegetables, has an important part to play in the drama.

Mr Peter Dawson has been shopping and as he leaves his local supermarket he has a big smile on his face.  In the cloth bag swinging from his left shoulder are two lamb steaks (Welsh), two baking potatoes (organic) and a bag of karela (on special offer). He has never come across karela before, but he feels sure that the small warty cucumber-like vegetables will impress Miss Pollyanna Jenkins, to whom he intends to propose marriage on the evening of this very day, when she comes round to his modest abode, invited to supper.

Whale blubber doesn’t taste the way you think it’s going to taste. Or perhaps you’ve never thought about that. I’d thought about it quite a bit, given where I was going that summer. I even thought about changing my diet before I went, but instead I was binging on steak, chips and red wine. Then, what do you know? The whale meat tasted just like beef.
