It’s really changed round here. I suppose it’s been quite a while since I was back and everywhere had changed a lot, but I’m still surprised by it. There’s a huge new supermarket now and a retail park with furniture and DIY stores. I can see them from the motorway, along with the massive car park that’s obligatory in these places. Heaven forbid you don’t drive these days.

It is purple when I wake, the mottled purple of a two day old bruise. I hate purple days, the kind of day that hangs over you like a threat and you know that nothing is going to feel right or happy. I don’t know what causes them. Maybe it’s a remnant of an unremembered dream or a presentiment of some kind; maybe it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. I just know that days that start purple never turn out well.
