Strictly Macabre – Phil Davies
2400 word General Fiction
Ginny, a once promising artist, has lost her ‘edge’ following divorce. But she knows her art and buys a famous painting cheaply at a local auction. Her family, friends and community turn against her, but her life changes when she hears the theme music of a TV dance programme.
‘Are you bidding today?’ Tim the auctioneer, striped navy suit and trademark bow tie, greeted Ginny as he busied himself with paperwork. Ginny felt edgy, but didn’t know why. ‘Umm, maybe. If there’s something worth buying, of course. But I expect it’s the usual old junk.’ She scanned the lots arranged around the walls of the old church, where infrequent praying had been replaced by regular bidding. Despite two years’ use as an auction room, it still retained a faint smell of lavender furniture polish and ancient hymnals.
