One day Betsey asked her dad, “May I have a farm animal for my very own?” “Well,” said her dad. “Do you think that you’ll be able to take care of it by yourself?” “Yes, I think I can,” said Betsey. “I want to keep a baby chick for my pet.”

Freddie was a very young boy who had a serious illness. He had to spend many days by himself. His former friends, who were also his age, lost contact with Freddie because of his sickness. When Freddie started to get better he became very sad because he had no one to play with. Hence, Clarence the Cricket appeared. Although Freddie actually found a real cricket he used his imagination to mold imaginary Clarence into his best playmate. They talked together, played games, and took walks. And Clarence became very real.
Freddie sat outside on a sunny summer afternoon and watched butterflies dancing around his mother’s flower garden. He had been sick with leukemia for a long time, but now he was getting better. Today was the first time his mom had allowed him outside. He sat in a chair with a book on his lap. The sun felt warm on his face, yet Freddie felt sad.

Timothy couldn’t fall asleep. He tried and tried but he just couldn’t sleep. “Daddy,” he called. When Dad appeared in the doorway, Timothy said, “I’m thirsty. How can I fall asleep when I’m thirsty?” Dad went into the bathroom, filled a cup with water, and brought it back to Timothy.
