Inside, the diner looked exactly like the ones you see in the movies. Glass fronted, door at one side, a row of tables with those built in padded seats along the window and a polished counter stretching all the way along the room. There was even a television mounted high on the wall. It was hardly welcoming, though to be honest, it didn’t have to be. Having spent the last eight hours hitching I was glad just to see furniture. The place was pretty much empty. I walked to the counter and ordered a coffee. There was the usual moment of hesitation from the waitress, too young to be travelling alone, quickly replaced by not my problem, and she handed over the change without speaking, before moving away.
Promises and Obligations – Jacqui Pack
2000 words General Fiction
Having had to abandon university to return home, Sean spends his time surfing and stacking shelves in a supermarket. But a chance encounter at the beach one evening threatens to change his life – that’s if it doesn’t end it completely.
Sean felt the change in the board’s rocking motion and looked over his shoulder. Here it came, the set he’d been waiting for, at least six rollers each promising to be bigger than the last. Lowering himself onto his chest and using his hands and feet to manoeuvre he turned until he was facing the beach. The tail of the board lifted, its nose dipping as the first unformed wave passed under him. Judging the moment with care, body flat on the board, nose close to its tip, he began to paddle.
Sidney Deller – Jacqui Pack
7000 words Teen / General Fiction
Downtrodden Sidney Deller lives with his step-mother and bullying step-brother, Bradley. He’d like new trainers, to go to the fair on the Common, and for his dad to come home. He’d also like to be noticed by the girl of his dreams, Hannah Prince. Sid doesn’t believe in magic, but he’s willing to give Cosmic Ordering a shot. You never know, right?
Dear Cosmos Things I would like 1 New trainers 2 Fewer spots 3 Muscles (six-pack if poss) 4 Better eyesight 5 Better glasses (if 4 not poss) 6 Less homework 7 Less of Bradley’s homework 8 Less of Bradley Sidney Deller didn’t believe in magic. At fourteen he was too old to be taken in by magicians, however good they might be. As far as he was concerned, magic tricks came down to sleight of hand and wearing clothes with long sleeves. Lots of trickery and zero magic. Cosmic Ordering seemed different though. At least, Sid hoped it was different. It certainly sounded different when Jordan explained it.
The Snow Bride – Jacqui Pack
1200 words Fairytale / Fantasy
The Snow Bride lives alone. But who is she, and how did she come to be imprisoned in her tomb of ice?
The Snow Bride lives alone. Around her the stalactites lengthen as each droplet of water leaves its mineral laden trace. She watches the fragile shafts of light that penetrate the rock as they are caught by the surrounding ice, casting multicoloured shadows over the motionless lake. Once, she detached a small stalactite, but its sheen dulled and the ice burned her skin. As it melted, tiny rivulets of water trickled over her hands, down her upstretched arms, falling like tears to the frozen floor.
