Laura – Denise Jay

1800 words Ghost / Horror Story

It’s 1892. Séances are all the rage. An impoverished mother and daughter prepare to put on yet another table-rapping show to supplement their meagre income. But this time they conjure up a real spirit and with tragic consequences.

Included in the Collection ‘The Day Death wore Boots’

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Laura first came to us at one of Mama’s soirées. That sitting in 1892 started like any other, but it is forever locked in my memory. It was the first time a spirit graced us with its presence and the last séance Mama presided over, for before the end of the following summer she would be dead, and not from any natural cause. There were only four at table that evening, the cold January weather having kept many of our regulars at home before their fires. I was not in the circle myself, but I did have an important job to do, nevertheless. In the absence of a real spirit, I played the role.

Old Jeffrey’s Shoes – Denise Jay

2350 words Ghost Story

When Old Jeffrey died in The Malt Shovel pub, the locals decided to hang his old brogues from the end of the bar to remember him by — and there they stayed. Decades later, when a new manager wants to convert the pub into a Bistro and insists the shoes are taken down for health and safety reasons, odd things start to happen.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

‘The pub’s supposed to be haunted, Dan! It’s part of the appeal,’ Penny said in exasperation. ‘But Penny, we want to open a Bistro here for goodness sake. Ghosts don’t fit the plan,’ her husband countered, ‘and anyway this pub’s not old enough to have a ghost.’ Then, with the air of having delivered the last word on the subject, Dan gathered up his paperwork from the office desk and marched briskly to the door. ‘And ghosts are so last century. A new marketing ploy is called for here,’ he shouted, as he left.

The Legacy – Denise Jay

1600 words Fairytale

Mrs Bell was a no-nonsense, down-to-earth woman until illness struck. Then, close to death, she begins to plead with her friend to find her wand so she can return to fairyland. Is this part of the process of passing away or is Mrs Bell really a fairy far from home?

This story is included in the collection Thrice Upon a Time

Additional DescriptionMore Details

‘I could fly, you know. When I was a fairy.’ I held the old lady’s crepe-skinned hand in mine and gave it a gentle squeeze. ‘Yes, Mrs B. You get some rest now.’ She closed her eyes and offered no resistance as her nurse gave the injection that would help her sleep, and, I hoped, give her some peace. But just as I rose to leave, her eyelids flickered open again, briefly, and her voice came strong once more. ‘I can’t go home without my wings, Jenny.’

The Rag Doll – Denise Jay

1850 words Ghost Story

When Helena moves into her new house, she discovers the previous occupants have left behind a crate packed with old children’s books. When she checks the contents before disposing of them, she finds a rag doll. Whose is it, and why is it so important that it never leaves the house?

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Helena’s new house was perfect, except for the small bedroom at the back. ‘We used this as a storage room, but it would serve well enough as an office I suppose,’ the previous owner had said when she’d shown Helena around, before swiftly leading her on to the master bedroom. Now she’d moved in and had time to inspect the carpet and paintwork in the room, the reason for the hasty exit became all too clear. Even the teddy bears on the sun-bleached wallpaper seemed to be frowning in disgust. And, to make matters worse, squatting in the corner was a packing crate with old dusty books jutting at a jumble of angles from the top.

The Snowman – Denise Jay

1400 words Christmas / Ghost story

As they prepare for Christmas in their new home, Josh and his parents are disturbed by a sinister-looking snowman who suddenly appears in their garden. How did it get there? And why does it look so angry?

Additional DescriptionMore Details

“Mummy. There’s a snowman in the garden. He hurt me!” Josh cradled his injured finger and lifted it up to show me, wincing as I took his small, cold hand into mine. “I’ll put some ointment and a plaster on that, shall I?” “Yes, Mummy. And after that, will you make the snowman go away?” It was when I went out to feed the birds that I saw it. There, near the tall hedge dividing our garden from the field beyond, stood a huge snowman with thorny briar for arms, a carrot nose and a frown of pebbles.
