Do It Yourself – Anthony Farmer
1500 words General / Crime Fiction
An old man is determined at all cost not to leave his hill-top Welsh farmhouse to be moved into a home.
‘Well I can’t stop you from coming can I? You’re going to come anyway. We want to stay here on the farm. It’s where we’ve been all the years since we got married and that’s final!’ The old man stares out of the window at the windswept yard and the neglected field beyond where dock and thistle sway in squalling showers. He listens to his son on the other end of the line, shakes his head to and fro as if trying to prevent the words getting to him.

2200 word Horror Story
A dark tale about a young boy who grows up believing he’s a panther.
For the second day running the Bridgewater Bugle newspaper runs another story about a big cat on the loose. Farmers report sightings of a panther-like predator and provide further graphic evidence of lambs viciously mauled. Livelihoods must be protected; some are calling for the army to be sent in to hunt down and finally destroy the beast. The front door clicks shut and a ghostly figure slides away from the house. Street lamps cast pools of light at intervals along the eerily deserted road; the air is still and cooling. A dark form makes its way towards open ground pitched into deeper darkness by the contrast with light spilled from the street lamps.
